Hi lovelies! I am Melissa, from Portugal. I moved to England when I was 9. After College I moved to Newcastle to study Fashion at Northumbria University. I’m now on my 3rd year and specialising in print, recently I joined the Pretty Disturbia team.

I realised I wanted to get into fashion when I was pretty young, I always loved drawing and helping my grandma with knitting and sewing. During college, while studying Art and Design, I became even more sure of my choice. I was able to do a fashion related project and first learned about print. Here I learned how fashion can help people differ from others, express themselves, emotions, and views. I realised that fashion isn’t just clothes it’s a necessity, you need them to work, to go out and to keep you warm. It’s a big part of the world. This was when I concluded that I was on the right track and that the fashion industry was truly where I wanted to work.

Throughout my studies I’ve had many designers that I looked up to, the most was Coco Chanel, she toke the fashion industry and caused such an impact that it modified fashion back then drastically. A time where woman were restricted to only dresses and skirts, she picked up and decided trousers should be acceptable too and she went for it. Her bold move changed everything and she continued to shock and change the fashion industry. This is the reason why I admire her so much.
I chose to study at Northumbria University because it was one of the Universities that offered the opportunity to do a placement and also because most of the lecturers had worked in the fashion industry. The friendliness, beauty and culture of the city also contributed to my decision.

When it comes to designing I tend to be inspired by nature, the environment and even certain events, though overall I try to find inspiration in everything around me since there is potential in everything around you.
